Tonight’s menu called for ham, green beans and mac & cheese. This is one of my go-to quick and simple dinners everyone eats without complaint. Well, tonight as I was making the mac & cheese and I got to the “add cheese” step of my recipe I remembered I never actually went to the store today and therefore didn’t have the cheese. Ugh! Well, I was too far into the recipe to make something new and needed to come up with something that would still be close to the mac & cheese my kids were expecting. Well, I think I just came up with a new and improved easier version of my recipe!! Everyone gobbled up what was on their plate AND we almost cleaned the pot!
The Secret Ingredient: Orange Food Coloring!
You can view my normal recipe for Mac & Cheese HERE. It’s a super simple, quick and cheap recipe. Basically, you cook the pasta in milk and butter with a little salt, pepper and garlic powder. Then when the noodles are done you add your cheese. Tonight, since I had no cheese, what did I do? I just added orange food coloring until it looked right!!! The cheese-less mac & cheese is still very creamy since the milk and butter cook down into an alfredo-like sauce. NO ONE in my family even noticed it wasn’t my usual recipe!!! In fact- I think they ate even more of it than usual!!!
